I left my battery in my pants pocket and washed the pants--can I still use the battery or is it useless

Dry it out over a dehumidifier or a bag of rice and try charging it.

I sent one through once and it was dead. The moisture shorts the cell protection pcb inside the battery, and kills it. It's unlikely your battery will work. You can dry it and see what happens. If you live in the desert, set it outside in the shade for a few hours so it's thoroughly dry, before you try it in your camera. Probably better to check it on the charger first.

It is also probably not worth taking the risk of trying it inside your camera which could be subjected to erratic voltage from a damaged battery.
