This was asked about in the April E-M5 thread. I know most have seen it but it always good for new people. Perhaps someone could list the Panny method as well.

    1) When camera is off, hold 'MENU' button and power on. Release button.
    2) Press 'MENU' and go to 'LCD brightness'. (under settings, last icon on the left)
    3) Press 'INFO' followed by 'OK'. You will now see your camera model.
    4) Press in sequence: UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, SHUTTER and UP
    5) You are now in the hidden information screens.
    6) For shutter count, press 'RIGHT'.

    R: Shutter RELEASES (number of)
    S: FLASH fires (number of)
U: USF (Ultra Sonic Filter) number of times it is driven by user and by automatic control of the camera is counted.

    Worked for me on E-PL1.

Chuck, the instructions you linked to are virtually identical to those posted above. Only difference that I notice is that Alan didn't specify that you need to go into the LCD brightness menu. I did anyway without being told (guess I'm not good at following directions) and I was able to get into the "hidden" menu.

Yes that was the missing step for the engineer in me following the directions to the letter!

Here's another source that supposedly covers all E models:

Hmmm... i just got my brand new silver body literally 30 mins ago and did this... my R is at 182?!?

Doesn't sound brand new to me :/ ..it also had a partially charged battery and also no tags.

...maybe testing from factory I hope.

E-M5 owners with firmware 1.5, can you confirm that it is possible to get to hidden screen? I wasn't able to see Olympus info after step 3.

How many shutter releases is an ep3 supposed to be able to do in it's life time?

I couldn't understand most of the information in these hidden screens, but I did work out that I've taken 6000 photos. Judging by my iPhoto album only having 1000 on there (of which probably only half are real keepers) I seem to do a lot of deleting!

There's a thread in the forum on this topic:

Apparently your high (new) shutter count is not out of the ordinary.

    Shutter Count

    I tried with E500; E510 and PEN E-PL1 and it didn't work.
Can anyone tell me how to do it on these models?

I just did the routine on my E-PL1 (902 shutter actuations); these are the steps I used. I have the VF-2 mounted, but dismounted it for this procedure.

    1. With a charged battery installed hold down the MENU button while switching on the camera.
    2. When the LCD lights release the MENU button and immediately press it again, once.
    3. In the menu go to SPANNER (line 5) and press RIGHT.
    4. Press DOWN until you are at the LCD brightness screen (line 3).
    5. Enter the brightness screen (shows twin adjusters) by pressing RIGHT and then press INFO and OK sequentially.
    6. You will see on the LCD 'OLYMPUS' followed by the designation of your camera (eg E-P1).
    7. Press in sequence UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, SHUTTER and UP for screen 1.
    8. You are now in the hidden information screens: RIGHT = screen 2, DOWN = screen 3, LEFT = screen 4.
    9. When you have your information simply switch off the camera.

Shutter count is on "Page 2" under "R".

The other lines on the screen mean:

    R: shutter release count
    S: flash use count
C: CMOS cleaning mode (with mirror lock-up - in E-410 series)
U: number of ultrasonic dedusting, ~ number of power switch on
V: number of use of LiveView
B: number of shot using In-Body Stablization

Actually there was a link on the first page that also said how to do it with the E-5xxx, but I'll repost it here (it starts with opening the card reader door with the power on):
