2 days ago I went to another cities and had some fun with my friend. It was raining very hard and we transferred our photos from the sdcard to PC. Suddenly the power went off and we were shocked. Our datas were definitely corrupted.

After several hours, yes, the data were corrupted. We can still see the DCIM and VIDEO folder but inside DCIM, the images were converted to unknown 3 files and one of them was 'USBC◘╧è◘' the unreadable characters are shaped like a gun..

I didn't bring my laptop to try open it from mac. So we were using windows. This is how we fix it :
1. Open run (windows+R)
2. Open command prompt (type : cmd)
3. On the open box type -> chkdsk (space) [the drive]: (space) /f
example (your sdcard is on drive K:) -> chkdsk k: /f
4. It will say that it's being repaired , after that
5. Copy all files inside DCIM folder to your PC

you will find many files with FILE00XXX.CHK format. If your images are all JPEG, you can just change the .CHK file type into .JPG

But if you have the RAW file, it will be hard, because you don't know which one is the JPG/RAW file.

So you need to download this : http://www.ericphelps.com/uncheck/unchk3.zip

It will automatically change the files into JPGs and you change another .CHK files that haven't changed by the program into your RAW file format (Olympus = .ORF , etc)

Example :
There are 4 .CHK files :
FILE0001.CHK
FILE0002.CHK
FILE0003.CHK
FILE0004.CHK

if the result =
FILE0001.CHK
FILE0001.JPG
FILE0002.CHK
FILE0003.CHK
FILE0003.JPG
FILE0004.CHK

then the file002 and file004 is RAW:smile:

Hope this helps and don't be afraid when you have this problem!

5. Convert lost chains to files <Y/N> ?
6. I selected Y and saw
1133364 KB in 470 recovered files.
windows had made corrections to the file system.
16,178,176kb total disk files
160KB in 5 folders
11,572,960kb in 481 files
4,605,024kb are available

32,768 bytes in each allocation unit.

First you have to understand the situation. If the card is corrupted, all the files are actually not lost. They are there somewhere. Chkdsk will restore the file and unchk will convert the file into jpeg format.

If you didn't see any file , try to open the sdcard disk with 7zip file manager. It can see hidden files. To see wether is there any data occupying your sdcard, check your disk properties. If there anything that said "xx MB used" , that means there is something inside.

One reason I use Sandisk cards is that each one comes with RescuePro software. This bit of software is so good, that once I formatted a card that I thought had downloaded onto my PC but hadn't (I'm not exactly sure what happened) and RescuePro was able to recover all the files. It's done the same when I've had cards go corrupt. It's worth buying a Sandisk card just to get this software.

To anyone with a corrupt disk:

If the data (pictures, videos, whatever) is critical, the last thing you should be doing is running any tool that will modify the filesystem (including chkdsk).
If the disk/card is having a hardware problem, you risk making things much worse.

A true Data Recovery tool will not make any changes to the disk/card's filesystem/files; it will just copy the files to another drive.
(the SanDisk tool may qualify, but I have not used it.)

Here is what I got when I tried the chkdsk option: same thing than "sdb" previously. Chkdsk changed my folder into one file with the exact same name. But now there is no way I can get my jpg because there is no more any folders..... If I open the file with "note pad", here's what I see:

any good recovery tool suggestion?

Put the SD Card in LOCK / read-only mode with the switch on the side of the card.

Then try something like one of these tools (I haven't used most of these myself):
http://foremost.sourceforge.net/
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/
http://www.free2explore.com/recovery/

or the aforementioned SanDisk tool

Hi Barry!
I was in the same situation as sdb and luffykudo. So, I tried with Foremost, but not even the "Free trial" it's not actually free, for saving the repairs you need to pay at least 29usd. Then I tried with Datarescue, but I didn't understand how to run it. So I tried with Free2explore, but it's a veeeery old program and it's not longer a Freeware. Then I used www.clarity.net, which sent me to www.cgsecurity.org... And that one! That one worked perfectly, it's necessary to read with attention and have at least a little bit of knowledge, beause it's not really simple to use, but it's really fast and does a great job, it recovered even some old songs and videos that I ereased a long time ago.

Thanks! You saved my photo-memories!

@Ginny88
Thanks a ton :) you saved my pictures
I tried chkdsk and it worsened the matters. I couldn't even see the files, but somehow Windows did show that 1.5 GB on my card was used.
I tried Ginny's method (PhotoRec) and was able to recover all pictures & movies from the card.
Thanks again gal :)
