How many of you keep your flash on the OMD?

It seems to leave so many little covers and bits and bobs available to go missing, (I'm the world's worst at losing things!) but on the other hand if you don't have the flash on, it is then a pain to have to take all this bits off just to get a shot, which wont be instantaneous?

    General consensus of opinion?

I often leave it on for days at a time, like if I`m shooting the family indoors etc. and dont usually take it off until I get of my bum and go outside. Dont use it all that often but like you said it`s a pain with all the little bits

I've yet to use the flash on my OM-D.

But I may be a special case. Overall I prefer my GH2 to the OM-D, so the Oly has become sort of a special situation camera for me. I use it mostly in low light situations where I want to take advantage of the IBIS, and don't want to use flash.

I've been debating whether I can justify keeping a camera this expensive just for IBIS. I'm considering selling it, in which case I might pick up something like the E-PM2 as an available light specialist. But I really prefer using an EVF, especially at slow shutter speeds, where being able to brace the camera and my arms against my body makes a big difference in steadiness.

  4. I removed the two-piece hotshoe and accessory port cover from my E-M5 and replaced it with the one-piece item from an older E-P2. Much faster to take on and off, one less piece to potentially lose, and it fits into the little rubber shoe that comes with the flash. Having said that, I'm fairly certain that I still haven't used the clip-on flash yet!

I leave it on all the time except to put a bigger flash on (FL50R). There are times that a pop-up flash is needed for fill & if it isn't attached, then it won't happen, so it stays on there to fill the role of a pop-up flash. It is also necessary for RC flash triggering (unless you have the FL600 & possibly the FL300 to do the triggering). Putting the camera back in the bag requires a little more care so as not to flip up the flash which might hang over a divider section.

I do like to take most photos without flash if possible, but other times the result still requires some extra lighting & that is when when one flash or another might be needed.

I've never had this problem, but if you leave the FL-LM2 on the OMD you CAN'T lose your eyecup!

The thing is I like form fitting SLR cases...I'm currently using the CS-3SH that I had for my E-300/330, and I'll be getting the OMD CS-36FBC when it's available here, so with them you can't have the flash on the camera and close the case.

I rarely use flash unless I'm in the studio, and then it's with a Pocket Wizard.

Thanks folks. Seems like swings and roundabouts with some folk doing each!

I will certainly have a look at the one piece from the EPL-2!

There should've been one in your set, IIRC. Unless you have some sort of special "admin" version that I'm unaware about

I like the way it looks with it on, but it adds on quite a bit of heft to the top (in terms of visual dimensions, not weight). I bought the camera for its size, so most of the time I roll without the flash. I wish they made it in silver though

No, I bought my OM-D like everyone else . I must have left the flash in the box unnoticed. I rarely use flash. When I do, drag out the FL-50R.

Check your box! Haha, it might not be something you use considering you have the FL-50R, but it won't do you any good in the box either :D. It looks pretty neat, I must say :2thumbs:

I leave the flash on the E-M5 sometimes for days without removing it, since I have the large eye-cup for the EVF, and makes it more of a hassle to remove the flash after putting it on.

I find the flash to be very useful as fill-light for taking pictures of people with bright background lighting, e.g. when I take my family to the park or the beach, etc. It works very well for this particular purpose, and is compact enough not to be a hassle. My only complaint is that it pops up or down a little too easily, making it switched on/off unintentionally sometimes...

I put it on when I unboxed the camera two months ago. It's never been off. OLY is not up to Nikon as far as flash implementation but it's pretty good and for me, flash is a mandatory item on a camera.

I have my clip-on flash on OMD all the time. Never know when I will need that extra artificial light in my shots.
