How important is having a hood for the 12-50mm?

and does the lens cap still fit when the hood is on?

Reviews show the Olympus 12-50mm is somewhat prone to flares, any first hand experience with this?

    It helps a little.

I have a knock off of the "official" hood- which is the same as the wide zoom hood.

It's a bayonet hood, so you can reverse it when not in use- but because it's short it's only useful on the wide end.

You might want to look at an old "3-step" rubber lens hood- to cover all of the angles of the zoom. I always found that a lot of µ4/3 lenses do well without a hood- but benefit from having one for most of them.
  3. I don't think that the hood is of much use. It was designed to fit a 9mm lens; how hard is it to design a bigger piece of plastic?

I bought it but looking at it on the lens, it's hard to see how it's going to do much at all. It's way too short. The hood for the 12mm prime is much deeper so I can't understand why they didn't make a version of that hood to fit the 12-50.
