Has anyone tried out this lens? Seems to be based on an old Tessar design and it's Bokeh isn't too shabby.

6 elements in 5 groups: that is the same as my 1970s Summicron. It is a highly under-rated lens. The Tessar formula is 4 elements in 3 groups. The traditional Planar formula lens is 6 elements in 4 groups.

Cheap and nasty ???

Samyang is an example of what a lens manufacturer can produce and wholesale through budget outlets such as ebay stores etc.....

Their 85mm F1.4 in 35 mm DSLR /film format is a good example, by all accounts an excellent lens..

I think when the masses ask for something these people will respond.

sammyyang? Not sure about the brand name but Jimmy Choo works for me :)

Thx for the correction!

Looks like the same lens from Phenix

and more from a Chinese site:

Hope those will help.
Great samples! This lens looks like a bargain for the quality of images it's capable of.

I believed it is made in China and the local price there should be like US$25-30.
The Phenix brand also have some other manual focus lenses for PK mount. As I read from the internet , Phenix also provided glasses for some other oversea name brand too.

I think it's a Korean company:

You are right about the price. It sells for just over USD $40 @ Gmarket:

I think it was a rebranded Phenix, if you remember another Chinese camera brand - " Seagull". Both Phenix and Seagull in China still making cameras and lenses, basically both were optical factories back to the 70s. Phenix doesn't has the technology to made autofocus lenses yet, they only make/made manual lenses. I used to own a Seagull slr back to the day when I still lived in Hong Kong ( 25 years ago ). From the pictures and the shape of the lens on ebay, is identical to the one I saw on the Chinese website.

OK, that makes sense. Perhaps the Korean company is re-branding the OEM Chinese model. Yep, I remember Seagull. Cheers.
