They can handle a light freeze, but a hard one makes them more likely to rot, at least that has been our experience (36 years of gardening).

Our town in South Germany lies on the Camino de Santiago. This figure cast in metal shows the pilgrim with his typical accessories: rainproof cape, staff with drinking bag (bota) and a bag for the necessary items. On his hat and on the cape in front of his heart is the identifying mark of these pilgrims: the St. James' shell.

A shell logo that has been around for a long time.. sure doesn't look like it did when I was a kid!

There are a few wild nut trees at home. These nuts have an extremely hard shell, and I need to use my bench vice to crack them open. Squirrels are also found of these as I see often them carrying one. They obviously also know how to open them, as I find neat half shells on the ground. Really I have no clue how such a small animal is able to split these shells neatly like that!
