Help deciding.... Panasonic 25mm 1.7 or Olympus 25mm 1.8........Portrait Lens

Agree with agentlossing.

I think since you already have the 20mm, you should get the Sigma 30mm f1.4. Just a little more "oomph" than a 25mm for background seperation. And then at least you have a 50% progression from the 20mm instead of a paltry 25%.

When size is important, you'd bring the 20mm anyway, so I don't think the fact that it is heavier should be a deterrent.

I will have to check into the 30mm. Its a focal length I use a lot on FF and Apsc.....thanks !

I think the 20 and 25 are pretty close. I could recommend the 25/1.4, for it's wider aperture and it's a little longer than 25 in practice, it seems. But if you really want portrait, the P45/1.7 is an exceptional lens for it's size and price. The Sigma 60/2.8 is also an inexpensive lens capable of very nice portraits.

I would only get the 25/1.7 (or 1.8) if you truly needed a faster focusing normal lens in the smallest/lightest price, and if I was choosing between the P or O, I'd go O for a variety of reasons (including not having focus breathing and closer MFD).

Between the 2? Something about the Pan 25mm f/1.7 I've never liked, the Oly 25mm f/1.8 is wonderful.

But I also tend to agree, I'd want a little something different given what you already have. If you want a 25mm and it's for portraits than I'd look at the PanLeica 25mm f/1.4. Or I'd look at the Sig 30mm f/1.4.

Would like one relatively inexpensive 25mm dedicated Prime lens for Portraits mainly , and have found myself absolutely "Stuck" deciding between the two !
I have a Olympus EM-10II and am currently leaning towards the Panny 25mm 1.7 based solely on the review images posted on this forum. Looks like it might have slightly better color rendition over the Olympus ? But also the corners and edges might be a bit worse than the oly version ?
Will be buying from the used market and only need to decide between the two......descisions….descisions…..lol.
This will be my last lens for a while as I have a nice kit going on without breaking the bank.
I currently have the Panny Lumix 14mm , 20mm and 12-32 …. and the Oly 14-42IIR , and 40-150 R
The 20mm lens is just a bit wide for my tastes in a portrait lens.
Any help deciding is appreciated.

Panasonic’s 25 1.7 is an excellent lens. Such great value too!
It was so good, that not long after I bought it, I also bought a 12mm f2 Olympus. But the Olympus, which cost nearly 10 times as much, is a piece of junk compared to the Panasonic.... go figure!
Ive never had the Olympus 25mm version.

the 42.5/45/56/60 all fit into the more traditional portrait focal lengths
The Oly45 is cheap cheerful and damn sharp but only F1.8
The Sigma 56 gets to 1.4 and with the extra length gives a narrower dof
the O42.5 is considered by many to be a classic
The 60mmF2.8 options don't work for me.

I personally own the O45 and S56 and reach over the 45 to grab the 56 .... realy should sell the 45 some day

Oly 25 but I suggest Sigma 56 F1.4 it is a marvelous lens

Oly 25mm is better than the Panny 25mm. However, since you already have the 20mm, I don't think getting a 25mm will make it that different. 25mm mu43 = 50mm FF = "normal" lens. So a 25mm is not considered a portrait lens. I suggest you look into either the Sigma 56mm or the Olympus 75mm. I find the Olympus 75mm to be a superb portrait lens.

I think 25mm makes a great portrait lens if you aren't doing head shots. You can show a bit of context.

Maybe I shouldn't have called it strictly a "Portrait" Lens.....lol.
Im not real good at terminology sometimes.
Probably more like a "Normal" lens that I use for people somewhat up close ?
