It’s not often you see these guys, they’re typically very shy. But this one was quite interested in what I was eating.

This is a black-tailed jackrabbit that I found on a walk. It was a suspicious death, so I called the Division of Wildlife Resources. They recovered the carcass and it had died of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus, a mostly lethal disease that affects both wild and domestic rabbits. This will be especially hard on the wild rabbits, and birds prey and other predators that mostly live on a rabbit diet.

The part of suburbia I live in has an abundant supply of these and brush turkeys. We do spot an occasional echidna in our garden too.

I saw this very young fellow the other morning and quickly got a shot through one of my back windows (in need of a clean).

While I watched, a Kookaburra swooped and tried to grab it up. It missed and the young bunny hopped away to relative safety.
I tried to get a shot of the Kookaburra sitting on the power line watching the young rabbit, but I only managed one blurry shot before it took off and flew away.
