I keep bailing on M4/3 because I hated not having a VF (and HATE the Olympus "clip on/pop off" thingy), but now that I have a good one I hardly use it. The screen is gorgeous.
Sorry, a bit off topic from me but couldn't resist the temptation.
I'm also little bit confused with the EVF thing with PEN E-P5. I kept it for long always in place, and it felt so natural to use EVF. However, I didn't like so much the looks of this nice camera with the EVF on it. So I decided to really give it a try without. And suddenly I found it really good with just the screen. (Of course daylight is not so harsh anymore up here in North)
But anyway, I can't make up my mind, with or without EVF
does anyone understand what FIELD REPORTS mean? it seems self evident that it doesnt mean 8 pages of speculation about a single subject! the OP wanted personal observation of people USING THE GX7; not constant repitition of NON USER OPINIONS. many of us, including myself, wanted what OP wanted. instead a few others decided that 8 pages of speculative argument about nonesense repeated ad nauseum was more important. its not my intention to point a finger at any specific person, and its not about who said what to whom during this 8 pages, but rather that this thread was hijacked to an OT IBIS rant, and a courteous request to start another thread about this incredibly uninteresting, theoretical discussion was just ignored and the IBIS discussion bullied on.
imo continuing this discussion is rude, its selfish, its annoying, its not informative, its clearly OT, and it should be done elsewhere. similarly rude to OP is this back and forth, so i apologize to OP and i will not be posting any more OT replies. hopefully the thread is allowed to get back on point.
I was asking for reviewers to ACTUALLY tell us how this feature WORKED in the cameras that they had in the field. So yes, I know what a field report is.
There are basically 4 things that are new about the GX7. These are:
1) The control layout and how it contributes to shooting ergonomics
2) The new viewfinder and how it contributes to shooting ergonomics
3) The new sensor and what it means for image quality
4) The new IBIS implementation and how well it works
Of these, the first and second items are really personal opinion, and very little objective information can be gleaned from field reviews, other than how well an individual felt the camera comported to their personal shooting style.
The 3rd of these things can and should be be determined from sample images, numerous of which are already available from several sources.
The 4th of these things is really the SINGULAR outstanding item that can be usefully quantified by user reviews, and should be quantified by user reviews, and yet we have reviewers who are basically intentionally ignoring or handwaving around the issue. So as a seriously interested prospective customer - I asked for reviewers who actually want to do a good job reviewing the camera, to rigorously test this feature. I'm sorry, but there is NOTHING inappropriate about continuing to ask reviewers to do this, until some of them actually do.
Well, your situation is good. You are happy BOTH ways!. The EP5 has such lovely, simple lines, and that EVF really does ruin the aesthetics of the camera--but then who cares...it's about the pictures, right? I just hated how it popped off all the time if you bumped it wrong, and the colors were all wonky, and mine flickered and jittered a lot (I had the 2nd version--I guess its been improved). Of course it's just a framing tool, and none of that should matter, but it just made me not want to use it--I just used my Canon with 100% coverage optical VF. The GX7 image is really nice and doesn't bother me at all. It does stick out, however, and doesn't feel that strong. That worries me when I try to pull it out of a pocket or bag quickly. Could you break it?

Personally I think the value of IBIS is overrated, but I understand also that in some situations this kind of feature helps you to take good photos.
With 1/20 sec, I can take a photo without blurring from my handshake.
With 1/2 sec, with the IBIS on, pana 20mm F6.3, (The focus is on the piggy cup), the photo looks OK. I took shot twice. The first time, with a slight blurr. The second time, no blur.
1st.

2nd. Focus on the "prince".

With 1.3 sec, looks ok to me. At f9, the photo is soft. Focus on the "prince" again.

But in reality, I rarely take a photo at this shutter speed, and of course, if the subject is moving, I need something faster than 0.5 sec.
Agreed. I am happy to have stabilization in longer lenses like the 14-140 and 100-300 and am looking forward to the IBIS in my inbound GX7, but the real world is that photos usually include people or things that move. Stabilization can do nothing for this. Just last month I took some nice blurry photos of the duck walk at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. They move a lot faster than I expected! The background is sharp, though. ;-)
Ha Ha, fools rush in but here is my two cents worth. I don't know where everybody is getting these G-7's to try out the IBIS. But be that as it may my impression is that this camera is meant to best the OLY EP-5.
Same price ,same features, and it takes movies without doing the equivalent of rubbing your stomach and patting yourself on the head at the same time as is recommended by OLY fans. And has beautiful manual button, and will give IS with old lenses ,like OLY. And doesn't have strap on flash,vs strap on VF choice and aggravation. Both are integral to the camera. What an idea!
I can't wait to get one.
3200 is about the ISO that I feel comfortable as well with the EM5. I will shoot 6400 with the EM5, but it does require some work in LR to make it more acceptable.
Does the GX7 have anything similar to Sony's multi-shot noise reduction, where a series of shots are taken and joined together to create a less noisy composite?
Quickest way to change ISO is to hit the 'up' button (above MENU/SET) and then use the rear dial.
Hopefully a firmware update will make the dials more thoroughly programmable, but I'll admit that I'm happy having the front dial to shutter speed/aperture and the rear dial to exposure compensation.

I assume its like all other Panny cameras and shows the shutter speed and aperture in the lower part of the screen, and then you can program shift from there to get the desired speed or aperture.
Is there anyone with experiences with the GX7 in combination with the Olympus 17mm 1,8? Is the AF as fast as on the Oly Bodys? Does the GX7 correct the CA?

Had a look at a GX& & 20mm MkII kit today, coming from Olympus E-P1 and E-PM1, the 20mm focuses FAST on the GX7! The new one seems bigger than the old one, as someone else here said before also.
Received my GX7 the morning of 9/24/2103. I don't remember liking a camera so much in so short a time. My impression is this may be the best handling camera I have owned in my 55+ years of photography. It feels good to hold, the LCD screen is good and the EVF is the best I have seen - no issues with my glasses or the "tearing" I have experienced in every other EVF I have used. I am still fine tuning the settings to save as a custom profile. The IBIS performed very well today in several aircraft museums. I am not saying it is the best IBIS, but it works IMHO as well as the OIS lenses do. I mainly shot with the 25/1.4 and the 14/2.5. I am anxious to mount my two favorite film lenses, the CV Nokton 50/1.5 and Color Heliar 75/2.5 on it. I know there will be better cameras from Olympus and Panasonic in the future, but I think the GX7 and I will spend a lot of time together for many years. I The GX7 is the closest thing to a perfect camera for my shooting style I have yet to use.
None of the above is in any way saying that the GX7 is a better camera than any of yours. I am only stating my general impression of the GX7 after one day of use. I will try to post again after a few weeks to indicate if my feelings have changed any. Now get out that favorite camera of yours and do what you love doing!
