I understand that if I use a non panasonic lens, without IS, when I attach it I have to enter the focal length. Suppose I am using a zoom. What focal length do I input. Decent price on the GX7 body now, and decently reviewed cheap Olympus zooms - 40-150mm, etc... but not sure how the IBIS would work with those lenses.

All electronic m4/3 will report their focal length to all u4/3 cameras. Unless you're talking about legacy Olympus OM system lenses all Olympus 4/3 (with an adapter) and m4/3 lenses will work fine. You can't set the focal length manually when you're using a compatible lens.

The only exceptions from Olympus are the two body cap lenses as they have no electronic coupling to the body.

Definitely "plug and play" as you put it.

I have the GX7 and a number of Olympus m43 zooms and primes. They all work fine.

Can anyone comment on the effectiveness of the (IBIS + Oly lens) v. (Pana lens with OIS) on the GX7 ?

Most reviews say that the GX7 IBIS is almost as good as the OIS lenses. In practice I have not noticed any difference. They both work very well for me.
