Had been feeling a little cooped up in HK recently so decided on a short 4 day break "up country" in Guanxi province around Guilin.

Guilin and Yangshou are famous for the limestone bluffs and hills that rise vertically out of the plains and river valleys. While touristy there lots of things to do that avoid the main traps.

We travelled light from HK with just hand luggage. Hired a driver most days to maximize time spent seeing stuff. This proved to be a must because the tour coaches stop for nothing, you either move out of the way or get flattened.

The weather was terrible apart from an hour or two in the afternoon. One whole day was spent North of Guilin walking in the hills and mountains around Longji which are farmed in terraces by the Yao people.

Gear used, GF1, 7-14mm Pana, 25mm PL and the 100-300 Pana.

Feel free to browse the gallery.

I recently got back from a couple of weeks in China (Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Qingdao, Dalian, Beijing, Hangzhou). The thought I had on the air quality was that the US is like watching High Def cable TV after experiencing snowy analog on rabbit ears for two weeks.

I can post process a lot if it out of my pictures to make China's cities look better than it really was, but murky, even on a cloudless day, is as good as it ever got. I will say that it was a lot better than my last visit back in 2006, but there's still a very long way to go.

In China now ... Wenzhou to Shanghai today, get a couple days here, then off to Manila

Wenzhou area is gorgeous, too bad it was raining.
