It's Geragh Haus, Sandycove, Dun Laoghaire, Republic of Ireland, but I don't have a photo ready.

I think the question was what building was I in? the answer would then be the Martello tower, that is now the James Joyce Tower and museum.
At Sandycove, Dun Laogaire ,Dublin. This tower is where the opening scene of "Ulysses" plays out. I can post a photo if correct.

The large white house is indeed Geragh as identified by @Shaw. It was designed by Michael Scott, a well-known architect, for his own use, and as far as I know it is still a private residence.

I marked @stagor as winner as strictly speaking I was looking for the building I was standing in, which is the James Joyce museum - the foreground of my photo is the stonework of the Martello tower.

I believe that Michael Scott owned the Martello tower at one point and was one of the founders of the museum.
