Personally, I like driving it more than Pikes Peak. Sure, a few less curves, but as it’s not a toll road, it’s not maintained worth a damn either. So the drive up is much scarier...

And if you don’t feel like climbing the whole mountain (I’ve climbed it twice), you can hike up from the parking lot about 100’ of so for a great view from the top -

Permanent structure at Everest base camp is 5,500mtrs and reportedly a helipad at Point Poonam on the Siachen Glacier is at 6.400 mtrs high.

FYI the city of La Rinconada has only been around for 40-50 yrs. however there may have been structures there longer.
