Thinking about the 35th anniversary today of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Ellison Onizuka, the Hawaii-born astronaut, was killed along with teacher Christa McAuliffe and five other NASA crew. Two of Ellison's cousins, also named Onizuka, worked at the state office where I worked, and the disaster came as a profound shock and sorrow to all of us. Let us never forget the sacrifice they made and that exploration and space travel is always risky.

When my son was in Scouting, his Pack and Troop would place flower leis and flags on the thousands of graves at Punchbowl Cemetery along with hundreds of other scouts before Memorial Day. Where we usually gathered before performing this solemn duty, we were near Ellison's grave near the driveway.

Then on an East Coast Study Tour I accompanied my son on, we stopped at Arlington National Cemetery and I saw the Challenger memorial. Remembering our heroes.

This can't have been today. Our weather wasn't this nice all day. :)
(I live in the neighboring valley)

BTW, lovely shots. It is a beautiful and inspiring place.
It was in 2019. I just discovered this thread and noticed there were no photos of the main monument.

I went super 4/3rds old school today. It was a decent day out with temps a bit over 50F so took advantage to hit up a nearby graveyard during my work lunch break. Carrying not only the beast that started it all, the Olympus E-1 but also the ZD 40-150mm F3.5-4.5, which is the first version, not even the mkII of that classic 4/3rds lens.
