I tried to use Variable Frame Rate today and my GH4 would not focus in more than one small spot and it was very difficult to even achieve that.
I've had great success in MovieMode with 1080 P60 and AFF but not 4k or 96fps.

I want to use it to shoot bowlers and then critique their swings/ball release.
But it seems worthless for unattended (yes I want to be in the movie not behind the camera) Video of 90 minutes or more.
I have tried every setting I could find to no avail, so I must be missing something.

Variable Frame Rate enable means you can't focus. I think I heard that in a review. Check your manual! It does make sense, it's made for slowmo so autofocus is useless.

edit: I found the review, it's uselful to set the GH4 as a videographer : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NgtBUIQPbM

Very helpful Video on setting up for Cinema Videographing.
He mentions that there is no sound or AutoFocus when using VFR.

Three things suggested that are a problem for me because I shoot unattended:

I like AutoFocus (AF-F)
I like to shoot at P 60 or more and not 24fps.
Setting the menue item to M instead of P allows me to adjust Aperture and Shutter Speed but does not allow Auto ISO.

It does encourage me to at least try shooting 4k again though.
