Maybe I am not reading manual properly , but using the camera at waist level , screen tipped up , it switches off maybe 'cos the EVF sensor assumes the camera to be not in use .
Is there a way to overcome this and make it useable ?
thanks

Ha! Yes, that caught me out recently.
In the C-spanner menu : set LVF/LCD auto to OFF, then it doesn't switch to EVF when it approaches your tummy.
I have the LCD back closed most of the time : EVF is then on automatically.
VERY clever camera this G1.

I have seen this too, but I think it is because the eye sensor for the EVF is getting blocked enough that it thinks I am using it instead of the LCD display.

To switch back to the LCD display, just push the EVF/LCD button to the immediate left of the viewfinder window. (Button #9 on the "Names of the Components" picture in my manual.)

I like the automatic switching, so I would not disable it as Ulfric suggests. YMMV, however.

The way I have it 'feels' like automatic : since I have the back closed (LCD-face inward) I can at any moment flip it out with my thumb to read menus or something and it switches to LCD ... then back to EVF when I flip the back shut again.
Some things on this camera really were made by someone who actually uses it! Brilliant.
Not many things work that well.
(Faststone image browser gives me that feeling too.)

The G1 is a beautifully designed cam - IMO one of the best ever.
