A Northern Lights reward in Iceland. The last image exemplifies the benefits of shooting RAW, as the original image was dark, nondescript, and virtually colourless.

That D700, so dated by today's standards, outspecked by today's M43 releases, weighs a ton, is the size of a huge brick and merely 12 tiny littlepickles. But a wonderful camera! If any m43 users are curious about FF and might want something sitting in the corner to have a go without much cost, then that's the one.

Problem isn't the weight of the camera, but if you pack three or four lenses, you end with a lot of weight in your shoulders.

But D700 still is a great camera and she gave me hours and hours of enjoyment and good photos.

Starting to cool down now but they're still out and about - D700 & 28-105mm in Macro mode.

Taking some old manual AI lenses for a spin on the D700

20mm f3.5 UD-Auto - good for sneaking up on cat toes (and highlighting flaky paint I wouldn't normally see that I'll have to touch up on the house)

Pretty rare I go for a walk with my D700 as its just to heavy in the hand. Definitely a relief when I switched to my G3 on the return trip.

Browsing through my archives I found this image shot in 2011 which had not yet been selected/processed.

Porto Katsiki Beach, Lefkada/Lefkas Greece (shot with a Nikon D700 + Tamron 28-75mm)

I'd resisted the siren call of full frame, as I have been very happy with my Pen-F (and 12-40 f2.8) and my original version E-M5 with a nice if not especially extensive collection of lenses. But I finally bought a new Sony RX-1 to replace my Leica X1 (which I loved, so I don't need lighting fast performance), and I find myself reaching for it more than I expected to. Full frame files can become addictive. Especially in low light situations with a bit of movement, putting it on manual at an appropriate shutter speed (1/100 to 1/200 depending on what is going on) at f2 to f4 and auto iso, I don't have to worry too much about how hight the assigned iso goes. The camera does a bang up job to 6400. I've always liked the look from the Zeiss lenses I've own (for a 500CM Hasselbald) and the lense on the this camera doesn't disappoint me. I don't get to hysterical about digital correction of distortion, as it seems to be the way of the present.

The shots below, taken at the Fireboat festival in Luang Prabang, Laos, come from the RX-1, pretty much jpegs as they came from the camera, as I'm still in Laos and haven't had time to work photos much beyond batch process size reductions in Photoshop. The other picture is of the daughter of one of my sons here. She is named Laura, after my late mother, and is cuteness itself in the eyes of her doting falang grandpa. That she shares my mother's name makes my heart swell with love and pride.

Sorry. That's an awful lot of blather for a picture thread. OH! And I won't be getting rid of my m43 stuff in any forseeable future.

I decided to forsake my usual micro four-thirds accoutrement on this trip and take a DSLR (don’t remember which brand) and a couple of lenses. Just for a change. I’d love to pretend that compared to my usual m4/3 touchscreen shooting style it was anything but a nightmare but I’d be lying.
