This Thanksgiving my wife and I met up with my mother and step-father in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a short vacation. My mother lives several states away and is in poor health (kidney failure, currently in need of a transplant) so it is difficult for her to travel, and we see each other infrequently. This was a unique opportunity to get some time away and enjoy time as a family all in one shot.

Naturally, I brought along my camera and a few lenses (G5 + 12-35mm, 25mm f/1.4, 45mm f/1.8, 100-300mm) and took lots of pics to commemorate the trip, so I thought I'd share with you all here. For those so inclined, the full set is available on the Flickr album. Comments are always welcome, provided they're of the constructive variety

We saw some Florida wildlife this trip we don't often get at home, such as egrets, various sea birds, and this little guy who was sunning himself outside a diner

My wife found us a really nice little condo a couple blocks from the beach and they had some great landscaping surrounding a nice pool & jacuzzi. Quite a comfortable trip and no more expensive than a typical hotel.

As you'd expect we enjoyed some time down by the beach, but it was disheartening to see that the beach has eroded to a tiny strip of sand and at high tide the water was actually washing up onto the road. In fact, while we were there a big chunk of the road collapsed into the ocean... does not bode well for the oceanfront property owners!

Given this was a rare family trip many of my photos were geared more toward snapshots and impromptu portraits. I was really grateful for the high ISO performance of the G5 and the fast 25mm f/1.4 to capture some of the moments that would have been impossible otherwise.

A few from our dinner at Thasos Greek Taverna - excellent food, great atmosphere/design - definitely recommended!

We also visited a local flea market and the HUGE "Swap Shop" market as well, which offered quite a bewildering array of goods both new and used for cheap prices. We got a kick out of the unusual clothing styles, which were altogether different than what we see back home in NJ

Oh, and yes I did spot some cameras - an old OM-G (badly beat up and heavy with fungus) and a 28mm Vivitar which was in decent shape. I bought the Vivitar and it'll get passed along to a buddy who has my old GF2.

Our last stop before the airport was the nearby Palm Beach Zoo, where lugging the 100-300mm finally paid off

My favorite shots from the zoo had to be of the Jaguar enclosure - I was expecting lousy results due to the chain link fence in the way but I was able to capture some credible images of these beautiful cats. (More in the Flickr album)

After the zoo we headed to the airport, surrounded by an absolutely gorgeous red-orange sunset that was the perfect way to finish out the trip. Hope you all enjoyed, thanks for looking!

Really nice set, Jay! Being a sucker for animal photography, I especially like your zoo shots with the Panny 100-300... Those large cats are awesome... nicely captured expressions. Makes me miss my mZD 75-300. :(  I know I keep on saying this but we need a MFT version of the 50-200/2.8-3.5 like yesterday. Was the lizard (awesome shot as well) taken with the 100-300? If so, nice macro capability.

Yeah I would be all for a 50-200mm 2.8-3.5 option myself & I hope Olympus (or Panasonic for that matter) comes out with one soon.

The lizard was done with the Panasonic 12-35mm - it has great close focus ability which I find really adds to the versatility. Unfortunately the 35-100mm doesn't share that particular trait.

Wow, that's a nice added ability for that very versatile lens. What's the minimum focusing distance on that, would you know (or I could look it up, too)? But I used to love using the 75-300 (and I'm sure the 100-300 is the same way as is a good number of telephotos) for close-up/quasi-macro flower shots.

    Thanks again for sharing!

Yeah, .25m is the close focus I think on the 12-35mm.

The 100-300 can work decently for close-ups too, thanks to the long reach. I actually did make one of a flower at the zoo with the 100-300, but didn't end up posting it.
