A bit of a digression for you cat lovers.
We've only had dogs as pets and I definitely love them. So I have little contact and experience with cats. Recently several friends and relatives have added cats to their families. I'd like to take kitty portraits for them, but I have no clue how to work with them.

I assume most of the portraits here are by owners of their own cat.
Have you taken snaps of other folks cats?
How should I approach someone's cat, with cam in hand, for the first time?
Aren't cats famously uncooperative? how do I get one to sit long enough for a stranger to take a shot?
Don't your cats behave differently when there's someone new about?
What kinds of treats and toys will win their cooperation?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
For great in your face shots, try smearing a can of tuna on your camera. And remember, cats are seldom worthy of trust.

OK, that reminded me of our visit to Ephesos a few years ago (pre mu-4/3 for me). I was amazed at how many cats there were there. Even in the loos!

When I ransomed Isis the Cat from veterinary care almost two weeks ago, I was ordered to give her medication twice daily for two weeks.

But after twelve and a half day (25 of 28 doses) she has now placed me under a strict boycott. Only emerging to eat her ham, and other foodstuffs.

She's also embargoed posing for pictures, obviously! That's why this picture is blurry.
Now she's also sleeping in some unknown location, as opposed to on top of me.
Talk about a suspicious cat.

This is somewhat offset by her sister, who is extra cuddly, on account of not being on the apothecary list...

EDIT: now, after a few days without drugs, we're friends again. She's stopped the evasive maneuvering when I try to pet her. And she's talking to me again. It seems like she wanted to be friends with me, as much as I did with her. She's purring by my side as I jot this down, and I'm as pleased as she. Not purring audibly, though...

Maine Coon cats are renowned for settling down in unusual places. Ours are no exceptions.

Harry (Ginger) quite often falls asleep on the dining table - the more clutter the better.

He's obviously in a conventional mood tonight and has opted for the basket.
