He was getting thinner. When we went to the vet this final time I had no idea... Or maybe I knew it, deep down. After the tests, when the veterinary came with the results, I made, what I hope, was the best decision for Simba. Both his kidneys were functional below 25%, and one of them had tumour like changes.
I could have dragged it out, and submitted him to several more visits to the vet, which definitely would have traumatized both Simba and I. But the sad end result would unavoidably have been the same.

He was fifteen years, four months, and one day of age when he left us. And I hope this time was good for him.

At least he was himself right up till the end.

I had brought with me a cat stick, that I thought I was going to give him on the way home. That became his final meal. And he ate it with the same appetite as he always did... I love this cat and I miss him.

Here he is with two of his favourite mouse toys.

When he played with them, they always were sogging wet when the fun and games ended. And a cat stick, of course.

Simba sleeps here, just close to Kajsa (2011) and Kismet (2009). I hope they are nicer to him now, than they were when he moved in with us, as a super annoying half year old cat in 2006. But we eventually grew to tolerate, and even love him. Despite him being super annoying...

I think he is enjoying the green fields with lots of mice, of just the right catching difficulty. And once in a while, an easily opened cat stick. And also a scratch behind his ears, by someone...

The earthly cat sticks are clearly too hard for cats to open real efficiently. So when I had watched enough, I had to take it away from him and cut it open.

And immediately the sisters were there. Their standard procedure was to wait, let Simba do all the work (normally, that meant breaking my resistance by making biscuits on my solar plexus, and a little drooling on me, perhaps...), and then appear.

But this time, after all his hard work with the stick, he growled at them. Of course he didn't mean anything with it. All show, that cat.

So after getting the first piece, he let them form the usual "treat line", as always.

The sisters now have had to device a new treat tactics. Mismet comes up to me, purring the house down, and giving me that look. And when I break, Isis is on my other side. Now they are only two in the line...

@Erich_H With our pair nearly 21 y.o., we may also be facing some hard decisions soon. So we very personally appreciate your position, Erik. Much empathy for your sad time.
Thank you John! But I do hope you don't have to make that decision soon. I think that the oldest cat in the Guinness Book of Records got to the age of thirtynine. So that is what we're always aiming for!

John ...
You're welcome, Erik.

New oldest cat record is 40y 3d!

I don't think ours will get anywhere near that ...

ATM, aiming for 21 y.o. on 23 December.

Both have dementia, heart valve murmur, dodgy kidneys. Lizzie is pretty much blind and deaf. Rosa is fairly deaf.

Other than that, in remarkably good condition for their age. IIRC, average age for domestic cats is about 13 some y.o.

But on the other hand, life must go on.
You will still have to obey our orders.
You will still have to cater to our perceived needs.
In other words: you will still give us treats when we tell you to!

Cross posted from the Cell Phone thread. I don't know if all cats like to get into bags as much as Stormy.
