I've been watching some video about botanical photographer Harold Davis's techniques. He does some photography on lightboxes and also flower heads on black velvet, amongst many other things.

The black velvet (amazingly cheap) is on order so I made do with black card. The technique involves placing the flower head on black velvet, taking normal plus underexposed pictures (several to ensure you have at least one black background) then blending in photoshop with a brush.

I went for two exposures and used blendif rather than a brush, then diffused the rose head using negative texture with the camera raw filter.

Mr Davis's flower heads tend to be the pick of a perfect bunch rather than what SWMBO says I'm allowed to pick out of the garden, but I'm pleased enough with the result.

Edit. Added a solid colour adjustment layer underneath and blended it in. Background wasn't uniformly black.

If I'm reading your comments correctly this is a first attempt. If so,
SPLENDID,
If not still
WONDERFUL

Thank you. It is a first attempt. I really like the simplicity in some of Harold Davis's flower photography - but his work is anything but simple. Need to get some better flower heads and create a more diffused light :)

There is a field of sunflowers not far from me that looks like it's just about ready to explode. The field is huge. I pulled over this morning on my way past it and snapped a couple of shots. In the next few days I'm going to monitor the changes and see if I can capture the enormity of the field enough to do it justice. I have been saying that to myself for the last few years and this year I mean it! So, stay tuned!

Have not made it to the field yet, it was raining as I went by today. This was from yesterday's roadside stop.

This is my second attempt at growing Fox-tail lilies and I had to wait three years for this to bloom.
