cool flower! Do you know what it is? I assume it is something that isn't cold hardy where I am.
Sorry, I don't know the name, Wendy. I was on a bird count at San Diego Botanic Garden this morning and I wasn't paying that much attention to the foliage. But this flower really stood out. There probably was a sign with the name, but I was so concerned about keeping my non-waterproof camera dry in the heavy morning drizzle that I snapped a quick shot and moved on. I couldn't find the flower after a quite a bit of searching at the garden's website.

Wendy, I remembered a sign that said Bromeliads on the path back a ways before I took the shot. I looked at quite a few images and Aechmea fendleri seems pretty close. It is native to Venezuela and Trinidad.

Thanks for going the extra mile to figure it out, Brian! I appreciate it. Not that I can grow tropicals here or anything (though it certainly feels tropical in my house at the moment - air conditioning is broken).
