This was a Herculean task. I bitch because I have nothing to shoot in my visually barren home environment. Thus I go months with out a single image. But when I travel the opportunities are boundless. I've taken several photo excursions visiting @Harvey Melvin Richards, @Web-Betty, and @deepaqua. And I routinely meet with @ivoire around Chicago and near-Midwest.

Here are some of my favorites:

A trip down to Great Sand Dunes NP. The spring runoff was at the perfect flow for my then 1 year old to run and splash, with Medano creek never getting deeper than about 8in and the water was warm from the sunny weather. The start of a new annual tradition:

A predawn March trip into Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park gave me some great alpenglow, then I was rewarded with this frosty reflection of Hallett Peak:

I was doing a 365 project for 2017, which meant I spent many lunch hours wandering around a little stretch of open space near my office. It was a reclaimed gravel quarry that was turned into a number of small lakes and a modest nature preserve. Going outside so many times peeking through bushes and trees for critters made me appreciate how many birds and snakes and deer call this area home. While I have a bunch of shots from these wanderings, here is one that I think is fun- fisheye macro of a painted lady butterfly during an exceptional year for migration:

Indian Peaks wilderness during peak fall color is a treat, especially when you see a dozen moose. This big fella snuck up on us on the trail and had me scrambling around one side of a boulder while he trotted around the other until he got bored and left. Exciting! Shot from the hip during my "escape":

A big roadtrip through South Dakota with the family was absolutely fantastic. The highlight for me was Custer State Park (photo is from Little Devil's Tower, one of the many hikes). Badlands National Park, Mt Rushmore NP, Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave, Mammoth dig site were all runners up.:
