    Hey guys i currently own the lumix 20mm 1.7 and oly 45mm 1.8 .Over the weekend i was using the oly 45mm in bright light and realized i need an ND filter to be able to shoot wide open. Since these are my go to lenses wondering what setup would work best on both thinking about picking up an ND and a polarized filter (circular) . I would like to be able to use the filters on both anyone know what specs to go with for a step up ring and what filters (brands) would u recommend.

    Thanks

    You'd need a step up ring from 37mm->46mm, got mine for 1€ at the local thrift store :) So I can use the same filter for my 12/25/45 combo. Can't recommend any specific ND filter yet as I bought a cheap one first to try it out before splashing out on something fancy. I'm getting a blue cast with the cheap one, but I don't know if that's something unavoidable...

    I use this step up shade from Lens Baby for my 45mm. It's 37-52mm and I put a 52mm filter on the end of the shade.

    You can change your white balance or do a custom white balance when you're using it.

    You could get a 37 -> 52 and a 46 -> 52 in step-up rings and then only get one filter. Cheaper?

    This is "my set up"... I have a "37>46" and a "46>52" step up rings and a 52 ND filter.
    The three items are attached to each other at all times and kept in a case.

    If I'm going to use the 20mm, I just unscrew the "37>46" from "my set up" and attached the remaining "46>52" + 52 ND filter to the 20mm.

    If I'm going to use the 45mm, I just attached "my set up" to the 45mm.

    Having one ND filter for all lenses is a nice and simple set up.
    I can also use the 52mm filter if I want to use the 12-50mm or the 9-18mm lenses.

    +1 for the lensbaby shade. It is metal and stays on my 45 all the time. I bought a 52mm cap for it. A side benefit is that it will keep you from losing the decorative ring on the 45.

    A couple of other step up rings and I can use my polarizer on all my lenses.

    I use step up rings to bring both lenses up to 52mm (common size to several of my other lenses) and use only 52mm filters. Also a couple of 52mm lens caps so the step ups can stay on full time. I use a hoya 52mm screw in rubber lens hood which has three 'positions'. Fully folded for stowing, fully extended works for the 45mm lens, and the middle position works for the 20mm lens. These are all cheap items. Total cost would be less than an Olympus lens hood.

    Go with the filter size that matches the biggest filter thread on the lenses you are likely to use (both current and what you are likely to get in the future), much cheaper to get step up rings than to buy a new lot of filters.

    I have 46 and 49 -> 52 step up rings plus a 52mm 10 stop ND and linear polarisers (49mm and 52mm) at present (the linear polarisers where in with the film lenses I was given a while ago, which is also why I have the 49mm step up ring as some of the film lenses have a 49mm thread).

    I've read repeated reports on why a step up ring should not be used with the 20mm f1.7 (since the lens retracts slightly when powering off). Do those of you who use 46-49 or 46-52 step up rings always take your filters off the lens before shutting off the camera or is it really not an issue?

    That's a very good point! I noticed that when I attached a step-up ring with the camera powered off and the ring was loose when the lens powered up.

    I leave my UV filter on the 20/1.7 all the time and screw the step-up ring on the front of the UV filter.

    Regarding the original question, I'd suggest buying step-up to 52mm from both 37 and 46 and some Hoya filters. In terms of ND, I've used an ND8 (3 stops) and it let me shoot wide open while still getting fast enough shutter speeds to freeze action. Go for a darker ND if you want long SS in bright light.

    I've honestly never thought about it, so apparently not an issue here :p

    I bought a Marumi Super Circular Polarizer after reading this test and I have their ND8 "Light control" filter too.

    I chose 52mm and a stepping ring for my 37mm and 46mm lenses but found that it does affect the mechanism on the 20mm so I have put a glass-less 46mm filter on first.

    20mm Lens -> 46mm glass-less filter -> 46mm-52mm step-up ring -> 52mm filter

    Does the Panny 14 retract like the 20?

    I thought you are supposed to remove the UV filter before attaching either the ND or any other filter. Does leaving the UV filter affect the image?
