I've posted a handfull of these up already in various threads, done and dusted with the post processing of the whole set so here they are.

Spent the summer holidays on the Gold Coast with family and friends, Coolangatta to be precise...this was my first time back since 2005 when I spent almost 2 years living and working up there before returning home to Melbourne, so in many ways this holiday felt like a bit of a homecoming too. To be honest I didn't shoot as much as I'd hoped, but then again, with these beaches and surf its not surprising. Still though, I think I got some decent shots out of it. My kit for the trip was the Panasonic GX7 and LX100. This trip was my first outing with the LX100 and I have to agree with internet sentiment...it's not perfect at any one thing, but it is very very good at many things, in my eyes that makes it a pretty decent package and I'm certainly happy with the results. Regrading the GX7, although I had a bunch of lenses I used it mostly as a digital back for my telephoto lenses to capture some surfing action, a job it and the lenses did well.

This was my first attempt at Surf Photography and I have to say, it's an incredibly fun thing to do, although admittedly it was difficult at times resisting the temptation to get in there myself ! These surf shots were all taken at a place called "Snapper Rocks"....a world famous reef break and a very photographer friendly location as a long rock formation protrudes into the surf allowing the shooter to get in nice and close...the Panasonic 100-300 hardly got pushed out further than 200-250mm ( I used the PZ 45-175mm a bit too) ...it was also a bonus that with good positioning one can get the city of Surfers Paradise in the background of a shot.

Can't wait to go back....we've rebooked our accommodation for summer holidays next year already :)

......I'm a huge fan of Black & White surf photography so thought I'd try a couple myself.

A nice bunch of interesting shots Joe. It's nice to see your photos and it looks like you had a ripper holiday. I visited Australia Zoo and went to the beach around Mooloolaba last weekend, absolutely brilliant.

The LX100 seems to be doing a good job in the right hands. Late afternoon at rainbow bay has a collection of nice colours.

Great to hear you had a nice holiday, and great images as well. I'm assuming your surf shots were hand-held?

Thanks everyone....yeah I really like the two b+w surf shots as well, I tried the mono treatment on a few of the shots but it worked best for those two and they are both on my shortlist of images to print.

Thanks Ken, many were handheld but I did also use a monopod on occasion, I don't recall which was which....i know that the OIS of the 100-300 is famously good so I had complete faith in it (at the extreme tele end some even suggest that it's more effective than the Oly 5 axis IBIS). Next summer when we go up again I think I'll take my light Benro Travel Angel tripod just for good measure.

It looks like a beautiful place, Joe, and you captured it well. And thanks for answering a technical question as well. We are heading to Hawaii this spring, and I was hoping to catch some surfers in action, but as telephoto zooms are not as compact as primes, I do not want to bring more than I need for the job. Perhaps I should just leave the gear at home and hire you to shoot my photos? Those are some really great images!

Thanks,
