    Hi all,

Sharing photos taken during my trip to West and Southwest USA in Apr-May 2014.

    My itinerary went like this:
San Francisco & Highway 1 – Northern Arizona – Las Vegas – Los Angeles - Anaheim

It’s been almost a year since I bought my first ILC. Before I bought my camera, I was just a “typical tourist” shooting everything in auto mode. Then I decided that I want to take better pictures and that was why I bought E-M5 (after much research). Being practicing and learning to prepare for this trip.

    C&C are welcome!

    Camera: E-M5.
Lens: Oly 12-40mm and Oly 9-18mm.
All shots are 12-40mm otherwise stated.
Haida ND and Hitech soft GND slot filters.

    First Light at the Gate
The symbol of SF to start the photos. Also met up with fellow forum member Nam during my visit.

    Red Swirl

    Electric City

Grateful to the bird for being my model and keeping still. :)

    Shark Attack!

    The Gathering

    Against All Odds
The Lone Cypress, over 200 years and still going strong!

    Sunset at Pigeon Point

    Big Bend
One of the icons in AZ. Spent 2 days shooting. The 1st day was a disappointment with mediocre sky and sunset. The condition on 2nd day was much better.

Visited 2 beautiful slot canyons. Canyon X and Upper Antelope Canyon.

    The Gateway
    A selfie at Canyon X :)

    Spirited Away
Upper Antelope Canyon - One of the most stressful but yet most fulfilling photography experiences I ever had. Would do it again. Maybe next time at the lower canyon.

    The Grandeur of Color

    You light my way

Let there be light in your heart
    And illuminates other hearts :)

    Many thanks for viewing! :)

Excellent work! Was this a photography centered trip, or a normal vacation? When I went with my wife to San Francisco it was a "normal" vacation so I didn't get to do the early morning and late night photos. Lol, she wanted to sleep in lol. I hope to make it back there and make it to antelope canyon someday. Those shots are all great.

    Thanks! :)
Overall, its was a normal vacation except for my trip to Arizona. The Arizona visit was purely a photo centered trip.
For the rest, I plan my itinerary so that I can include photo opportunities to my visits.

Can I ask for your "Shark Attack" pic - was that with a 10-stop filter? I see it was shot at F20 - I'm interested as I just got a 10-stop filter and wondering if it'll be up to the job on a sunny day when I go on holiday next week.

Etude, if you don't mind I'll add the same question to "The Gathering". Was this a sunny day shot as well?

On your Red Swirl and the one with the bird, I'm guessing you are using a ND filter. Which one?

And did you set up the shot, change the ISO to 200 (which mode?), attach the filter and let the camera do all the math (shutter duration, etc.)?

    They are stunning photographs!

BTW, I can't find the Haida's on sale anywhere except Haida.

Very nice. You've certainly justified your EM5 purchase. Isn't it fun to use? Any Vegas shots?

Incredible series. Even though I've seen photos of many of those places, you brought something beautiful that I haven't seen before to most of them. Thank you for sharing these, and thanks to Jason (Djarum) for featuring the thread.

Under one of the canyon photos you commented "Upper Antelope Canyon - One of the most stressful but yet most fulfilling photography experiences I ever had." I can certainly see why it was fulfilling, judging by your excellent pictures, but could you elaborate, if you don't mind me asking, why was it stressful? I read an article recently in a photo magazine about shooting at that location and all the necessary requirements for one had to have like licensed guides, proper permits, and having only limited time, etc so I would love if you could share some insight as to that experience and how one can go about doing photography at that location.

The only picture I came close to on my San Francisco trip was the first picture of the Golden Gate bridge. lol I would love to get similar results to any of the other images. Great job!
