It's only about 12C today and for the second year in a row, Fallas is cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. Some men and women are walking around town in their Fallas outfits, but it feels a bit sad without the food, wine, statues, and parties. I hope next year will be a normal Faelles year with celebrations and no masks.

Beautifully shot Steve, and such a shame about the masks.

In the first shot I was wondering why she was wearing headphones...until I realised it was her incredible hairstyle.

And I'm sure I recognise those eyes in the fourth shot.

Great stuff.

VALÈNCIA (EFE / Carlos Bazarra). Dejection seizes the Fallas community in Valencia, which sees how this silent day of San José will not burn its fallas either nor will it be the culmination of that week of celebration that, before the covid, turned the city into a giant parade with a million people surrounded by color, music, flowers, noise, ninots and, in the end, fire to welcome spring.

An unprecedented crisis, the uncertainty about when they will be able to celebrate "normally", a thunderous silence only altered by a loose firecracker and, above all, bad weather - with thermal records not seen since 1939, when there were no Fallas either - dominate this gray Friday for a sector traditionally full of color, hedonism and ingenuity, which desperately calculates how it can survive.
Sound of silence
If in 2020 there were at least calls for traditional Valencian music to be played on the balconies -the confinement began-, recordings of old mascletaes resounded, ingenious challenges were viralized in honor of the party and there was an optimistic feeling to celebrate the Fallas that summer, such as It had been promised, this year silence reigns.

There is hardly any noise of firecrackers or firecrackers, which are only felt sporadically in a park and watching that there are no police nearby - since there is no Fallas Town Hall, street pyrotechnics is prohibited-; There have been no "awakenings" at eight in the morning, nor "mascletà" at two in the afternoon, nor fireworks castles at midnight.

The pyrotechnic sector claims to be on the edge and now its outrage is maximum, having officially raised the possibility of a decentralized "Nit del Foc" and without public by Valencia but Health brought it down days later due to the risk of crowds on the rooftops. His employer has broken relations with the City Council.

Nor is music heard in the streets by Valencian bands, nor are there evening or night parties in neighborhoods. There is a nightly silence that, even though it has been the norm for months - due to the curfew at 10 pm - this week overwhelms and is thunderous for the thousands of people who live for and for the party and to whom this parenthesis hurts the most than any fault burned before its time or a mascletà aborted without a final earthquake.
A city without queues and that does not smell the same
One of the most characteristic features of the eternal "València en Fallas" was the smell. Especially the donuts and churros stalls that were scattered throughout the city, in addition to gasoline from motorcycles -the most fallas means of transport- and the smoke from the fuses to shoot firecrackers and the one that came out of the "mascletaes" from many neighborhoods, along with the thousands of carnations from the Offering to the Virgin.

This year, the city smells cold, with a storm that has brought the lowest daytime temperatures in nine decades and snow a few kilometers away, and it shows that there are no streets cut to plant the faults, so there is traffic - and pollution - usual for the rest of the year.

There are also no queues to get into restaurants and bars, only the obligatory ones to keep the safety distance in certain businesses, nor queues with dozens of coaches parked on the Paseo de la Alameda from which thousands of tourists left to visit the most famous fallas, risky or controversial.

On Wednesday, dozens of falleras dared to go decked out to the Plaza de la Virgen to simulate an Offering of flowers to their patron, praying to heaven for the loved ones who were taken by covid-19 and imploring for a future with more hope that this present tax without party or devotion.

As a consolation, the image of his "Geperudeta" has circulated this week in his "Maremóvil" (a "Popemobile" for the Mare de Déu dels Desamparats chartered by the Archbishopric) around the city so that the Valencians would pay their respects and proclaim the wind their traditional religious virtues.
Nostalgia and future
This year, the asphalt at the points where the 382 fallas were to be located has been serigraphed with the claiming legend "Ací crema el cor d'una falla. Tornarem" (Here the heart of a falla burns. We will return), promoted by the Central Board Fallera, also responsible together with the City Council of the cauldron whose flame, for nine days - it goes out this Friday -, remembers the victims of the covid. But since there are no two without three, the strong wind blew it out for a few hours.

He does it from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the "kilometer zero" fallero where the multitudinous "mascletaes" are fired and the municipal falla is planted, which this year has had to settle for an "app" that recreates, with augmented reality, how it would have been to contemplate it right there. His motto was "Protegeix whatever you estimate" and he defended the environment and the fight against climate change.

The bust of the municipal failure of 2020 -whose body was burned at dawn and in secret last year-, which was erected as a symbol of popular force in the face of the pandemic with a huge mask, is still packed together with hundreds of other ninots in a big warehouse.

And while the mayor, Joan Ribó, says that there will be Fallas when vaccination is more widespread, without specifying dates, union institutions, entities and associations linked to this Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity demand in a joint manifesto direct urgent aid before their moment of "extreme difficulty".

The drop in their turnover is between 90 and 95% over 2019, and they warn that their activities are experiencing a "dramatic economic and labor situation, and a certain risk of disappearance of a good part of the" artisanal and industrial production network of silk mills. pyrotechnicists and fallas artists.

On Saturday spring will begin, in silence, and this year it will not smell like burned fault ash either.

I took this one today and really like it because it challenges convention.
