Is the Ex-Tele Mode "really" providing any benefit in "Photo" mode as it can't be used in full 16 megapixel mode? ...Since you must use 8 megapixel mode or less isn't the same effect achievable by shooting at full res and cropping down to half res?

I can see the benefit in video mode where it does a 2.2X multiplier while still maintaining true optical capture by utilizing a smaller portion of the sensor- but in photo mode it seems useless.

You are correct it is simply a crop. Not trickery, they just don't use the common wording - Panasonic has been doing that for quite some time with their cameras even long before 4/3 and micro 4/3.

There are a number of arguments about this.

IMHO, it's slightly better than cropping after the fact because you maintain the pixel density. When you crop in post, you are enlarging both the pixels AND the space between them. When you use ETC, its more like enlarging the pixels without enlarging the space between.

That said, I think you would have to be printing HUGE to see the difference.
