recently when i have switched my camera to "M" the exposure compensation has dropped to -3... so my pictures are all very dark.

I read in the manual that the exposure compensation cannot be adjusted in manual mode. So can someone tell me why has it suddenly dropped to -3?

    Thanks in advance, Chris :)

That is not exposure compensation. That is indicating the shutter/aperture combination is 3 or more stops under what the meter says. Now, if your monitor is showing a bright live image, you may have live boost on, which always shows a monitor regardless of the exposure.
