With the em5 it was state it was 1/250 sync speed but this isn't exactly true ... here why:

1/250 With the flash that comes with the camera
    1/200 With the fl600r
    1/160 With the fl50r

The new EM1 has advised a sync speed of 1/320?

Can those with this camera test it with other flashes to see how constant this new sync speed is.

    Much appreciated.

Also, strangely the E-M5 syncs at 1/200 sec with the FL36R.

On page 132, the E-M1 manual says the upper limit is 1/250 sec.

At least the FP TTL mode can be used for hotshoe & RC use (with the above flashes that have that mode on them) that allows shutter speeds up to 1/4000 sec (E-M5) & 1/8000 sec (E-M1).

Can anyone give an update on the sync speed with different flashes.

And, if anyone has RF602 triggers, what sync speed can you get without a shadow.

    Thanks

On the E-M1 in my hand the max X-Sync speed is 1/320. How do you measure it with different flashes? Put the flash on and see what it shows?

Sounds like Olympus is letting us sync as fast as the flash will fire (in terms of flash duration). That's pretty cool that they're tuning the max sync speed based on the flash rather than just setting the max sync speed to the lowest common denominator, like Canon does.

The fl50r syncs much faster on the older olympus DSLR bodies. So why so slow on the EM5??

Probably a slower shutter unit than the DSLRs.

    1/125 with the FL36R and the E-M1

    When the E-M5 does 9 fps & the E-5 does 5 fps, I don't think so.

It's ALSO dependent on the FLASH/STROBE you are using...it's a "chain is only as strong as its weakest link" scenario!

If you are using an older or cheaper unit the upper sync speed may be longer.

I always tell people to use 1/125th to be safe..for general purposes there's no reason to go faster!

I'm just trying to understand what the flash sync speed is for each flash without having to go to FP mode (which lowers the strength of the flash output).

I am hoping that they are all at least 1/250 on the new EM1. Would be lovely if they were all 1/320!!

So far we've got X-sync speeds of -
    FL-LM2 (comes with camera): 1/320
    FL-300R: 1/320
    FL- 36R: 1/125

Can anyone fill in the gaps about the FL-600 and FL-50R?

I have a Metz AF 50-1 and it syncs up to 1/160 sec. on my E-M5, so that's probably also the max on the E-M1.

Not necessarily as the FL36R does 1/200 sec on the E-M5 & only 1/125 sec on the E-M1.

Well I did some more testing and I was wrong. The x-sync lower limit plays into this as well. I generally have my low limit set low 1/15 because this also affects the way auto ISO works.

To test this accurately you have to set the x-sync and x-sync lower limit to 1/320. Then you can tell. When I set it this way both my FL36Rs will sync at 1/250.

So with the EM-1 the FL36R will sync at 1/250.

The regular FL36 will sync at 1/250 as well.

I must say I am finding this somewhat counter intuitive!

I would expect that the fl600 will sync to 1/250 with the E-M1 given the 36 results.
