We all know that the 50mm ED macro lens was a sure shot for the 4/3 system. It was a great portrait lens with some impressive macro capabilities, especially paired with a teloconvertor. How are the images with the 50mm on our m4/3rd cameras? Are they still pretty good? I would like to see some of your skills with this lens on a m4/3 camera, along with some comparative images with the 75mm 1.8. I know their a different focal length, but I wonder how much the 50mm drops quality sharpness when attached to a m4/3 body.

I have both the 50 (and the 1.4 TC) and the 75 and I use them on an E-M1. I treat them as 2 very different lenses, using the 50 only for the macro aspect, and the 75 for more general stuff.

There is no logical reason why the 50 should be any worse on a micro 4/3 than it was on a 4/3 body... its the same size sensor !... only difference is we now have 16 megapixels as opposed to the 8-12 we had with 4/3

I am no macro expert, and there are others on this forum who do do some stunning macro work... just wish I wasn't bad with names :)

This was taken recently with the 50 plus 1.4 teleconvertor

as an aside this was taken with the 50-200 with the 1.4 teleconvertor

Nor am I a sharpness obsessive either :), but general perceived wisdom is that the 50 was a standout lens in 4/3 Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 50mm 1:2.0 Macro Review: Digital Photography Review

And every review of the 75 highlights it's sharpness even wide open

and my experience that even stopped down to f11... by which it should be losing out to diffraction issues it still to me is pretty stellar

there are more of my 75 shots here

    Olympus 75/1.8

They are both stunning lenses... I would run into a burning house to retrieve my 75... for the 50, I would be sad to lose it... but then again I have the old OM 50 macro which would probably suffice for my macro needs

    There is this..though short
    Showcase - Olympus 50mm f/2.0 macro ZD 4/3

That was my favorite 4/3rds lens and I had a hard time selling it. I don't think the focus would be worth putting up with on anything but the EM1. I remember trying with an EP1..awful. There's no reason the image quality should be any different on M43...possibly better even. Macro you can get away w/manual focus too. The Oly & Sigma 60mms rival it as well as the 45 to a lesser degree IMO.

I would concur, the manual focus at a great depth of field as the 50 has may create a more trying image taking experience. I too would most likely use the 50 for more macro based applications. The 75 is a standout as the 50 was for the 4/3 system. The bokeh seems to be rendered similar as I remember as well for the 50 in the images above. So I gather, no technical downfalls to the 50mm on the m4/3 system other than manual focus issues.

It's excellent for macro or Portrait, though I never shot much macro personally, but seen others results. It's just slow and noisy to focus (cripplingly so without the EM1 capability I'd guess), which bothered a lot of people even on 4/3rds cameras...I didn't mind so much, but now I'm probably spoiled by M43 lenses that focus instantly almost, that it would probably annoy me. But if you need it for macro focusing manually that shouldn't be a big deal. Even the 60 focuses manually or by moving the camera at 1:1. If you do deliberate portraits it's ok, but when you change distances it racks back and forth a few seconds before focusing with a sorta grinding noise. It is tempting for what they sell for now though. It renders so nicely.

Yes, I have much experience with the 50 on my 4/3 system. Wasn't quite sure how it measured up on the m4/3. Seems like it is quite the same. Well, I suppose the 14-40 will be before the 75 on my bucket list. The 50 will get me through with what I use it for. I would like to see some more of everyones magic with the 50 and their m4/3rds. Image up all.

I was sad to sell my 50 f2...but I was even happier when I started using the 75. The only thing I miss with the 50 is the close focusing.

This 50 is still very sharp: I use it for macro and portraits. It's not so slow for me but AF is a little noisy (the same as the Canon 50:1.8)
