My wife and I were travelling in Lima, Peru over Easter this year, and we decided to attend the Easter mass at the Catedral de Lima on the Plaza de Armas (the central square in the historic district).

We arrived quite early (~10am for the 11am mass), but activities were already ongoing. Groups of people were carrying large altars/icons through the streets, accompanied by much fanfare (brass bands, incense, etc.). There were four icons: crucified Jesus, resurrected Jesus, Mary, and Mary Magdalene (if we understood correctly). This had been going on for several hours (we could hear the bands playing from our nearby apartment), but when we arrived the altars were processing back and forth in front of the cathedral.

Outside the cathedral, the streets had been decorated with murals made from flower petals.

Once the service was about to begin, the altars were carried down the center aisle into the cathedral.

    The cathedral itself was beautiful.

Once the service was over (to the strands of the Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah), the altars were picked up again and processed out the center aisle and back into the streets. Leaving the cathedral, I was able to get very close.
