E-PL2 turned out to be weaker than I expected. It fell off the bed and the screen has a crack now. Although it seems like E-PL2 has a plastic cover on top of LCD cause the crack has no effect on pixels (See picture). Searching through this forum it seems like Olympus is charging a flat fee for LCD replacement which probably isn't worth it for me.

My two year old Canon S90 has fallen on concrete from at least 5ft many times and not even a scratch...

Good Reminder to buy a GIOTTO glass cover for my EP-2. i use them on the M9 and M8. A friend of mine dropped his M9 with the Giotto glass screen, which did crack- but is user-replaceable. The underlying screen was fine.

Think of a Giotto glass cover as a filter on a lens- easily replaced, and a lot cheaper than a repair at the factory.

The problem is that the LCD is probably an entire assembly, even though they have that plastic cover over it. I prefer the E-P1 screen over the E-PL2, even with the lower resolution. One thing I noticed is that while the E-P1 screen feels flexible, the E-PL2 screen is hard. The latter will crack easier, but I think if the E-P1 screen got hit hard, it would trash the screen entirely. You probably could just replace that plastic cover, but Olympus probably doesn't get that assembly from it's vendor that way. Personally, I wouldn't be too botherd by it.

Yes, that is exactly what happens with the E-P1. It's just like if you crashed the LCD on your computer - you would break the crystals and they will blacken your entire screen (on a computer monitor it'll start off more isolated, but the 3" screen doesn't leave it much room to roam before it takes over completely).

Personally, this gives me great peace of mind to see that the glass cover on the E-PL2 screen is durable enough to keep the LCD behind it safe! From my experiences with the E-P1, this is a marked improvement in durability.

@Art: I would just keep shooting with the cracked glass and consider yourself lucky that you have an operating LCD to shoot with. Then when you upgrade next, you can use this as a backup camera. I think the flat rate for this is somewhere between $100 and $150, though.

If you don't mind about it, I think it's more like 'cool' battle scar :).

Darn and to think you could of just bought a cheap $14 LCD protector!

That's why both my bodies have LCD protectors, especially with the E-PM1 since the whole back part is integrated with the screen.

I wonder if it voided my warranty?

Probably. But I never had any protectors on any of my cameras or iphones and nothing like this ever happened so I think it was just an isolated incident or maybe Pen is too fragile.

I don't think the thin-film would have done much. Maybe one of those thin glass protectors would have helped.

Had that happen to my E-PL2, but it left the screen non-functional. Oly fixed it for about $120 if I remember correctly.

my e-p1 fell from the top of a bunk bed atleast 6'5'' tall) and the lens got removed, battery ejected and vf-1 tossed out... but all was working after i put it back, just a ding on the side...

...either i'm really lucky that it didn't break, or the E-Px series are really tough cameras!

Is there any part numbers listed on repair paperwork?

If we're trading wounded camera pix, I believe a passerby stepped on the Crumpler bag containing my EPL1. Suppose I could blame myself for putting it under my seat. Camera was two months old and it cost $160 for an Oly repair

In the past, I have swapped out the LCD screen from a dead camera into the same model with a cracked display. Getting too hard for my eyes to see these little parts.

Called Olympus, they charge flat rate of $109 + tax. Don't know if it's worth it but I suspect if I'll have any other problems in the furure they may not honor the warranty with a crack like this.

When they repaired my EP1, the gave me a new 6 month warranty on the camera in general. Make sure that $109 includes the shipping (it doesn't, of course, include the shipping to them). Also, comment to them that it's practically the value of the camera, etc. They came down on the first price they quoted me for my EP1. Finally, it seems they are slow in repairing. Took about a 3-4 weeks on my EP1. YMMV.

Yes, the shipping from them is included. They didn't quote you a flat rate? I'd be surprised if they'd lower the price..

No, they quoted me a flat rate. They quoted $180. I said it's worth more than the camera. Can you do better. They came back the next day with $140 (including return postage). This was a sensor/shutter issue.
