No elixir really (save a couple of coffee cups) ; I just cooled the WB about 900 °K (from 6500 to 5600) to remove the yellow cast of the light bulb, and corrected the pincushion distortion, which in turn led me to crop the result because I induced a barrel shape and had to cut a square in it ;-)

I used showfoto for this, but I'm sure many softwares can do most of the job. The only 'special' effect is the geometrical distortion, but there's a package called PTlens available for many operating systems to do exactly this : geometrical and chromatical aberrations correction for any lens (can be used creatively for many other purposes too).

If subject is moving, shutter speed of 1/200th sec or shorter is best.

More light generally means more sharpness...because you can use a smaller aperture (higher f number) which giver you more depth of field.

Maybe it's obvious, but depressing the shutter halfway lets you confirm auto-focus, before you take the shot.

And -- very adorable babies!
