    I recently looked at a friend`s E-P1 and was a bit astonished.

When using his and half-pressing the button to focus etc, the display stay at it is. But with my one, the display turns very bright for a moment.

Now I am looking through the menues and cant find the factor to change this.
    Can someone help me, please?

Could it be he is using a zoom lens, while you are using a fast prime? Maybe your camera stops down the lens to protect the sensor, but open it up at the max value while focusing?

Just my 2 cents, untested (I don't have an EP1)

17 and 20mm were used, both with a chosen aperture around 2.something
