I think the colors and image detail are a little more appealing in the E-PL1 (2nd photo)
Camera settings: Aperture priority f5.6 Small fine 1024x768 jpeg, Base ISO, Noise Filter off, , Vivid Picture Mode, +1 sharpness, Gradation Normal, Auto white balance. E-M5 14-42 II R MSC kit lens on the E-M5, E-PL1 14-42 L ED kit lens on the E-PL1
    E-M5    OLYMPUS M.14-42mm F3.5-5.6 II R    22mm    f/5.6    1/1000s    ISO 200

    E-PL1    ---    22mm    f/6.3    1/500s    ISO 100

Wow. You're right. I hate for anyone who got a E-M5 to have buyer's remorse. I'll trade an E-PL1 to anyone for their E-M5.

Might be the kit lens that's making the difference. Can't really be sure unless you take more controlled tests.

I think you could be right because I happen to have two of the original E-PL1 kit lens's and two of the new II R kit lens's and whenever I put the II R's on the E-PL1, its images get a bit softer and the colors are not quite the same as with the original E-PL1 kit lens.

I have a native 40-150mm and I'll try that one on both the E-M5 and E-PL1 tomorrow to see if the jpegs look the same or not.
