I got a message that my local dealer had a silver 12-50 kit in stock, so I picked it up this afternoon while on my lunch hour.

Wow, in the few hours since I have had it:

    I have lost 30 lbs.
    My hairline has stopped receding.
    My dog loves me again.
It no longer burns when I pee.

Okay enough nonsense. I haven't had it but a little while, and although I was expecting to hate the kit lens (thanks internet!), I actually think it's pretty cool.

I am including some 12-50mm kit lens samples that were not done in a testing environment. These are just kitchen light samples with a few that have some strobe light action to get a low enough ISO. Enjoy.

The macro mode is pretty cool. Here are a few, and some crops.

I knew that kit lens was better than we were seeing......the macros abilities have been very under-reported. It almost looks like a dedicated macro. Wow....Ben Freaking Franklin. Sign me up!

Can't wait to grow a mullet when I get mine! Congrats.

Where you based? There's no local camera store in Miami that stocks Olympus.

Charlotte. The only real camera store, Biggs Camera ( I don't consider Wolf Camera) had only one and it was a pre-order. Guy decided he didnt like Silver. So I got it. Sat there all weekend and Mon and Tuesday. I love my luck.

I"d seen some things with this lens from real world shooting that led me to believe it was better than the numbers from shooting charts were indicating. Yes, you can tell something from what I call photo numerology, but you can't tell how the glass is going to render an image until you shoot it in the real world. Most of us will not be using our lenses to shoot test charts in the studio. As it will be my wide angle until I can afford some fixed primes, I'm happy to see it perform so well. Thanks

You are welcome. This is the kind of post that I, as a consumer, appreciate seeing, so I wanted to be able to do it for you all and share my good fortune in having one so much earlier than most.

Love the macro shots...very impressive detail (to my untrained eye anyway). Starting to rethink this lens!

    Nice shots odzbodkins!

I was also amazed when I used the 12-50mm.
It is a very capable lens in my opinion.
I also love the macro ability of this lens.
Combined with the IBIS of E-M5, it will produced sharp and stunning macro shots handheld.

Happy times with your E-M5. :)

    Wow- thanks for the post!

It'll be a great kit lens for hiking in the northwest USA (I like taking pictures of woodland mold and fungus as well as landscapes), which I plan I doing the week after I get mine. I had a feeling the lens was underrated, and with users shots starting to trickle in- it would seem that way.

I shot this using the 12-50mm kitlens in macro mode.
I love how the lens render the details in this old peeling branch.
