what is a good kit to buy to clean some visable dust off of the cameras sensor?
VisibleDust swabs are good: Camera sensor cleaning — Arctic Butterfly sensor brush, loupe, swabs, liquids
They have 3 fluids, depending on whether you think it's dust, oil or a mixture.. I've used their "EZ Sensor Cleaning Kit" before for an oily D7000 sensor
What camera are you planning on cleaning? The OMD can't be cleaned, it has to be sent in.
my Sony A65.
If it's the OM-D, don't touch the sensor! Dunno about other IBIS cameras if you can clean the sensor. So check it out first.
But on any other digital camera my methodology is to:
1) Blow off as much as you can with a hand blower (like a Rocket Blower) and inspect;
2) Use a small Lens Pen to clean off the sensor, then blow again and inspect;
3) Use a soft brush designed for sensor cleaning to brush off sensor, then blow again and inspect;
4) Use Eclipse (sensor cleaning fluid) on a Pec-Pad (lint free) and lightly swab the sensor, then blow again and inspect.
I try to blow with the camera upside down to let gravity do what it can with the dust. Use the Eclipse as a last report after all else fails.
