The first Hairy Dragonfly of the year hatched at Slapton on 20th May. Photographed whilst still hardening its wings, hence wings closed until last shot when they were being vibrated at high speed (shot taken at 1/320 in overcast conditions) to warm up the insects flight muscles prior to its first ever flight.

Fantastic and I don't even care for insects in general, though I somehow don't think of dragonflies as insects but often feel as though they're flying jewels. That last one is superb!

Jewels they might be, but as far as other insects are concerned they are fearsome predators more than capable of tackling wasps and the like.

Even better, Barrie. I'll now think of them as the well dressed and graceful raptors of the insect kingdom.

    I look forward to more!
