I do believe their is a market for a small MTF camera, it just has to be done "right". I think a small camera can serve two markets: beginners, interesting in learning more and hobbyists looking for a second body.
I've been looking for a second body to my GH3 for over a year. I've tried the GX1, GX7 and GM5. I'm now looking at the LX100 and LX7.
My requirements:
1. Small size (jacket pocketable) but still good ergonomics. See Sony RX100 for size, LX7 and LX100 and maybe E-PL7 for size and ergo.
This probably means fixed lens. Some argue this defeats the purpose of MFT but there are still options like GX80 and PEN series for folks who want flexibility while losing (some) portability.
2. Fast lens: f/1.7 of the LX100 is good starting point. Can we get f/1.4? This is going to greatly help regular family photographers get good indoor shots. I think 24mm-70mm reach is perfect for this camera.
3. EVF: if ZS40 can fit one (and RX100 and GM5) then this new camera should have one.
4. $600 street price.
LX2000: a LX7 size fixed-lens camera with 1" sensor and f/1.4 24-70mm. $600. Possible? Should be. The ZS100 is 25-250mm at f/2.8. Just give me that sensor with a brighter, shorter lens. Done. Who would buy this? Lots of folks are buying the RX100. Put some better styling and handling on the body and Leica glass and Panny can win back the compact camera segment.
Then, the "Pro compact":
LX200: minor upgrades to LX100, smaller body, MFT sensor and f/1.7 24-70mm lens or even a fixed prime.
