Does anyone know what the 'Demo Mode' function is in the camera settings? I just ordered a supposedly new GX8 and want to make sure I didnt get a floor model. I saw that I had a this function in the settings menu. I couldnt find anything in the manual or forum about it so I tried to google it and still couldnt find anything explaining its function on the GX8. Although I dont know what "Demo Mode" is, I suspect it might be a function designated for floor model cameras used for "show and tell" but i am not entirely sure. To further strengthen my suspicion, I checked the shutter count of the camera and found that the camera shutter had been fired 48 other times and powered on an additional 18 times before it got to me. I contacted the store where I purchased the camera and the CR couldnt shed light on what the 'Demo Mode' was and why it was previously powered on. He told me that they shipped out the camera exactly the way they received it from the manufacture and suggest that I should contact Panasonic directly to ask about why the camera was previously turned on. He said it could have been powered on for QR purposes but again suggested that I should contact Panasonic first...

On the bright, the CR said that if Panasonic suggests that I return the camera for an exchange then they would honer that and would process an exchange for me.

I assume that some number of on/off cycles and shutter actuations would be the associated with the basic acceptance diagnostics that any camera should go through (i.e. does the device actually work properly now that it's assembled in one piece).

48 seems awfully low for it to be a floor model. If it was used for one (which I doubt), it means that only a couple people touched it. And since mechanical shutter life expectancy should be well over 50,000 actuations (and there are very, very few penalties and lots of benefits to using the electronic shutter on the GX8) I would tend to agree with oldracer. Does it matter?

Are there outward physical signs that it's been used?

It's not necessarily a deal breaker for me. The camera looks fine and seems to function properly. What bothers me more than anything is the fact that I paid for a new camera but may have received a demo model. Not that I have anything against demo or floor models. I have purchased a demo model camera in the past and that camera performed wonderfully for me but I paid accordingly for that camera. Perhaps I am being too nit picky or just looking for a reason to get an even deeper discount than the one I got... Probably the latter :p

Thats what the store customer rep was thinking as well but didn't want to confirm since he wasnt a product specialist. In any case, I dont want to make too much of a big deal about it. Like I mentioned above, I dont mind having a demo model camera but I would have preferred paying even less. I mean who doesnt?

Thanks for this link. Funny though as it looks like the blogger is also unsure what the 'Demo Mode" does.

The camera has a "demo mode", that doesn't mean the the camera was a "demo camera".

I know it doesnt. I was just suspicious about it since I wasnt able to find it in the manual. I did contact panasonic earlier today and the tech I spoke with was able to confirm that I did receive a floor model camera. He also mentioned that the camera is "reset" after testing so the shutter count and power count should be zero when a customer receives it. I've already contacted the store I bought the camera from and worked everything out. Thanks for all the replies...

I purchased a brand new GX8 from B&H. After unboxing I charged the battery and went to setup mode The information(time, date etc.) had already been entered The battery took ony a few minutes to charge. This camera had obviously been in someone else's hands B&H exchanged it with no questions. If you are not sure if the camera is new and Panasonic is willing to exchange it, I would do it in a minute
