Having used mine since late March, I can see say it was worth every penny. Although I kept my Oly 75-300 for non-photo trips, This lens and the 9-18 or 12-35 is all kit I need, I have a Canon 500D which makes this lens a fine macro lens (a good closeup even without it). But point about a need real should be taken seriously. IF I was not a birder/wildlife photographer, then I would say that the 75-300 or 100-300 would be better options for most people.

I have this on order and should be here next week. I have been using the Olympus 50-200 swd with 1.4x tele for all my long shots a great combo, it will be interesting to see how the 100-400 compares.

Have just purchased this lens and love it's OIS and its fine detail. Easy to use hand held but need to be careful. Taking it to Bali to shoot some scenes of surfers in a week.

    Looks ideal for birds.

Is anyone else finding the zoom ring stiff?

Mine was stiffer than I liked at the start. It doesn't feel that way after a few months of use. I can't tell you how much of that was the mechanism loosening up and how much was my getting used to it. It's probably some of both.

Indeed. If you want an honest, straight forward, no BS real world m4/3 gear review, look no further than his YouTube reviews.
My first stop whenever considering anything m4/3
