Crash course requested --- GH3 vs. GH4 for use with a school?

I am thinking I might want to try a GH camera for working at school events to take stills and videos for the website.

The GH2 sensor is too old, but a few questions --

  • Is the GH3 sensor newer? Is it the GX7 sensor?
  • Does the GH3 have pdaf?
  • I know the GH4 has 4K video, and I think I want to get there, but it's above my budget, so would the GH3 be a reasonable landing place for a year or so, taking stills of: indoor kids events, K-8 sports events, videos?
  • I understand the GX7 jpgs are much improved. Is that also found in the GH3 or the GH4?

Any thoughts on either for this use case is greatly appreciated.

If you're not going for the GH4, the GH3 is an excellent alternate choice. 1080p video out of this camera with good technique looks great!

As far as the GX7 goes, some of the GH3 tech and functionality has been incorporated into it. Results with both will be somewhat similar.

I have 2 GH3's, a GH4, and a GX7.

You might want to consider an old as well The e-m1 takes much better video then most people think. Check out Andrews take at eoshd.
