Coral Pink Sand Dunes

Discussion in 'Scenic, Architecture, and Travel' started by Harvey Melvin Richards, Jan 9, 2015.

  1. On Wednesday I loaded up the funny looking children and the funny looking bike and we all took a short road trip. The destination was the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. About 2/3 of this dune system is a state park, and funny looking children have to be on leashes. This doesn't sit well with me or the children. So we headed to the north end which is BLM, and also has much more elevation gain than the state park does. So I rode (pushed) the bike up to the top of the dunes.
I brought my 40-150 f/2.8 and the MC-14 teleconverter, the Oly 9-18 f/4.0-5.6, and the Rokinon 7.5 Fisheye. I probably would have been happy on the bike ride with the 12-40 f/2.8, but on the trip over and back I really liked the 40-150 + 1.4X teleconverter.
All the photos went through LR, and few were seriously messed with.

I was still in a grumpy mood, but the kids were ecstatic. The dunes were half covered in snow, but that did little to slow my snail like pace.

My only goal was to take a bunch of photos, and I succeeded.

  2. I believe this was the last bike ride photo that I took with the 40-150, it was time to go wide.

Hi Harvey. Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a neat place. The color of the sand is so vibrant. Ironically I most enjoyed the B&W of the dead, twisted juniper, #8 in your second post.

  4. I have to agree. After dealing with all the photos I took, I was getting a little tired of the coral pink sand everywhere (not to mention, everywhere in my truck also).

Very nice! I like the feel of the place in off season with no one around.

I love the Zion overlook picture.

And your funny looking children look they're having a blast! I love letting my furkids off the leash too. Eventually, I'll drive up to Utah with my brats and I'll ping you for all the secret fun places.

    Thanks for sharing.

  10. I had been seriously thinking about another trip back to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes. I wanted to go when the sun was low in the sky (great shadows), there was a little snow on the dunes, and there was blue sky with great clouds. I also wanted to go mid-week to avoid the motorized users. Three or four weeks ago the dunes got 20" of snow. I have been calling once or twice a week since then to learn what the conditions were. On Wednesday I finally decided to head down there. There was still too much snow, but we had fun anyway.

The photos were all taken with the the 12-40, 9-18. and Rokinon 7.5, except #1 which was the 40-150 F/2.8. I used both the E-M1 MkII and the E-M10 MkI. I carried a tripod and took some High Res shots, but Olympus in their great wisdom has the default set to small jpg, and I didn't realize that I needed to change it, so I wasn't happy with the photos I got.

I went in to the north eastern side, and the road was less than ideal.

  11. And a few more of the hundreds that I took. We went a grand total of about 3 miles. There is something about pushing a 50 pound bike through 2 to 4 feet of wet snow that is rather exhausting. More photos here.
