Coming from 4/3

Hello all. A 4/3 user here. Trying to see how the micro world is going and seeing if I can snag some gears to complement my current setup.

Do you plan to use any of your 4/3 lenses on M4/3?

Maybe the 50f2 and potentially the 12-60 also. My main aim is to add a small mu4/3 and the 75mm f1.8 so that I can go around taking pictures of friends and relatives to their annoyance

I was a long time 4/3 user before I started acquiring m4/3 gear. I used 4/3 cameras and lenses professionally so I had a wide range of 4/3 gear but it's all history now.

Even though Olympus reps have said the company is coming out with another 4/3 camera soon, there just hasn't been enough camera, lens, and accessory development in the 4/3 line from Olympus to justify me continuing there.

I've been very happy using m4/3 gear (along with other brands I won't discuss right now) for my personal and professional work. I noticed that my 4/3 stuff was just collecting dust last month and decided to sell it all.

My experience transitioning from 4/3 to m4/3 is that the wonderful 4/3 lenses deliver equally stunning image quality on m4/3 cameras, but even with the latest cameras and adapters the AF from 4/3 on m4/3 bodies is painfully slow compared to native m4/3 lenses on m4/3 bodies.

I loved the image quality of the 9-18mm, 12-60mm, 50mm, 35-100mm and 50-200mm 4/3 lenses on my m4/3 cameras but as more and more quality m4/3 lenses started showing up from Olympus and Panasonic there was less and less reason to use large 4/3 lenses with slow AF on these smaller cameras.

If this was still 2010 or even 2011 then I'd say you should absolutely use at least some of your 4/3 lenses on m4/3 cameras, but now there are so many great m4/3 lenses that you should only use 4/3 lenses if you cannot afford to buy m4/3 lenses.

Yes, I am also thinking of moving away from 4/3, however, I love the 4/3 lenses, the 14-35, 35-100, and 50-200 are all exceptional glass IMHO (but the 35-100 is way too heavy and large, putting it on the camera makes both me and the people around me self-concious ). So I might dabble first with the acclaimed Sony sensor and a native m4/3 glass and see how it goes. In any case, I think I will keep at least 2 of the above lenses and an E-3/E-5 for a rainy day.

Yes, I absolutely LOVED my 35-100mm lens for the 4/3 mount. It was a JOY to use on my E-1, E-330 and E-3. I felt similarly about the 50-200mm SWD. But the size/weight and the AF speed of those 4/3 lens got less and less attractive on my m4/3 cameras as more m4/3 have come out.

The Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 and 35-100mm f/2.8 are SPECTACULAR lenses in their own right and are much, much lighter than the 4/3 equivalents and have much, much faster AF. Yes, you're not getting the f/2 constant aperture of the 14-35mm and 35-100mm Olympus lenses but the optical results are very close.

The only thing we're missing right now is a fast 50-200mm lens. I really want Olympus to make a m4/3 version of the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 lens.

@all. Thanks for the welcome. I had just snagged an OMD EM-5 and a 75mm f 1.8 so I hope to be out and about and making a menace of myself real soon

The 12-35mm and 35-100mm Panasonic does sound nice, but then I will have to sell the 14-35 and 35-100 for 4/3 to afford them and then I will be lusting for the old g(r/l)ass again. And JJJPhoto, I agreed with you about the 50-200mm. It is a splendid lens and with the 12-60 or the 14-54 forms a formidable 1-2 punch and was the main reason I go 4/3 years ago. Add in the 11-22mm and one can get a 3-lenses KO.

I am sure there are a more than few of us who have nice 12-60, 50-200 and other stuff like 50 macros that they hang onto until the day Olympus get round to making them work on the better sensors of today

while we wait there are great lenses for the micro 4/3 platform and you have jumped in with the best... the 75mm... a truly stellar lens
