Classical portriats with the kit zoom

    The problem is you need real lighting skills. Your shots are very nice, but I couldn't pull this off with the kit lens. I'd need to do some learning first.

    I don't know that I'd consider these classical portraits, but I agree that a standard kit lens is plenty suitable for portraiture if you mind your composition and your lighting, especially at the 42mm end.

    I'll mention the fly in the ointment.
    The 4/3rds sensor forces a standard zoom to have a focal length which is not good for focus separation at kit-zoom-apertures,
    APs-C kit zoom is a bit better in that department, a m4/3rds or 4/3rds bright zoom is even better,
    but spending a reasonable amount on the 45mm (or others) is much more "portraity".

    When using studio lighting, I have often used a kit zoom @ f5.6-8 for portraiture. But most people mean subject isolation when they speak of a portrait lens.
