Carter, Wyoming...Maybe A Ghost Town

Under the strong urging of my wife, and a growing PowerBall Jackpot, we traveled to the hinterlands of Wyoming to fetch a lotto ticket. It was a beautiful day for a 360+ mile drive other than unbelievably strong winds and temps in the 20's. This old railroad town is kinda off the grid is southwest Wyoming with no services available...did

Fascinating area.
Curious re the flat top hills.
Are they natural? Almost look like spoil heaps, but they're "everywhere".
I Googled but found nothing useful.

6,498 feet elevation. Wow. The current highest point in Australia is only about 1,000 feet higher than that!

For some unknown reason, I've always thought of Wyoming as flat, and a bit above sea level ...

The MacDonnell ranges (in central Australia) used to be about 35,000 feet high, but that was a little while ago . These days, they are about 1,000 feet high ...

Yes, they are natural and this is in a high desert area around 6500' of rolling hills and mostly sagebrush and prairie forbs and grasses.

Pretty sure Wyoming has the highest average elevation of any state. Might also be the windiest.

That's not too far from Fossil Butte National Monument. Which is a beautiful place to visit, as well.

Carter is a genuine rarity ... an accessible and approachable ghost town. Maybe the census counted the squirrels.

My favorite abandoned place is probably Gilman, Colorado. Until the taggers got there, it was the epitome of an eerie ghost town.

Beautiful shots (I was struck by how well the GX9 rendered the colors) and nice-looking dog.

Thank you for your generous comments! For me, the GX9 has been a god send...paired with the 12-60 2.8-4.0 it just sings and a great little travel camera for landscape or abandoned towns!! Our little Boston will be three this month and is the most inquisitive/alert dog we've had and best of all, she is starting to mind!!??
