I had to opportunity to photograph the dress rehearsal of Carmen Ballet given by The N.C. Dance Theatre in Charlotte. While what I photograph is always in color, I shot b&w for over 40 years, and I love b&w so I converted these with Nik Software.

I thought I had it figured out how to shoot ballet, but have since realized that each ballet is going to be lit differently, so you are really going to have to know your camera and how to change things in the dark.

I do shoot with both eyes open, so I can see that a leap or some other action is about to happen.

<object width="700" height="434"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I00000I70v7oAhF4&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I00000I70v7oAhF4&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="700" height="434"></embed></object>

This last shot was taken during a break in the action. I once worked for a weekly, and we would have loved to have been able to run a shot like these.

I am really sorry that these could be my last ballet pictures. The director is concerned that there are people at the dress rehearsal who are not under contract with the ballet, and so that have little say as to how these photos might be used. I am trying to get my web page set up so that someone who came to visit Charlotte and wanted to know what there was to do here might visit my page and see that the ballet would be a good thing to visit. It was a wonderful thing to take part of as long as it lasted. These are really hard working dancers who put their heart into everything that they do.

These are some wonderful photos Chuck! Well done. Hopefully you'll still get the chance to keep on shooting similar photos.
