What are some good under $450 monitors?
You can look for a refurbished NEC IPS panel at http://www.necdisplay.com if you live in the US.
I've got a Dell u2412M 24" IPS display that I'm pretty happy with; the colors look great to my eyes. Then again, I've never tried calibrating it or checking for gamut coverage...
Well I bought another monitor for photo editing a couple of weeks ago. The good news is US$450 is plenty enough money to get a color accurate monitor.
If you are editing mostly for the web and not printing at home then you need a color accurate monitor with 100% sRGB like this one....
http://www.amazon.com/PA248Q-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Professional-Graphics/dp/B008DWH00K - US$360
If you are using it to print at home any need an even wide color gamut - this one at roughly your budget has 99% aRGB
What color space is best for sending to a lab for printing?
And the Asus is only $318 now.
Depends on the lab, but usually sRGB or Adobe RGB. Always check with the lab.
I got a Viewsonic 23" IPS LED backlit monitor for a hair over $130 with shipping. the deal is over now, but you can find that particular monitor pretty inexpensive on Amazon, and with sRGB rendition it's not bad at all out of the box!
I bought a Crossover 27" IPS from ebay, 262€ = $360. Very happy with it.
